Raising Cain in 'Las Vegas' As cameras roll in Culver City on "For Sail by Owner," the Nov. 28 episode of NBC's Monday-night hit "Las Vegas," Dean Cain, previously seen in roles as diverse as Superman ("Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman") and convicted killer Scott Peterson ("The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story"), strides into the high-tech surveillance room at the show's fictional Montecito Hotel and Casino.Playing successful businessman Casey Manning, he's there to meet with casino manager Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel) and his predecessor, "Big Ed" Deline (James Caan). As seen in the episode that aired on Monday, Nov. 21, a strong wind swept owner Monica Mancuso (Lara Flynn Boyle) to her death from the casino roof while she was arguing with Danny. Monica had called the meeting because, via a hidden camera, she saw Danny call Casey about a possible takeover of her heavily leveraged casino. But neither was aware that Casey was already in cahoots with Ed.Now, with Monica out of the picture, the three are together, and Casey is announcing that ... well, you'll just have to watch. But suffice to say that Casey will be dropping by "Las Vegas" from time to time."I'll be here when there's something fun to do," says Cain during a break in filming, "and there's a good, involved storyline. I'm playing a fun character on a really fun, entertaining show."Caan happens by as Cain is being asked if he, as a young pup, ever dreamed he'd be working with such a movie legend."When you were a young pup," Caan says, "did you think you'd be doing anything with old Grandpa Moses?"Cain laughs then says, "It implies also that I'm no longer a young pup. But I have such great respect for the body of work he's done. It's insane. It's amazing. I love to be out there working with him. I always watch."Of course, working with a legend could force a younger actor to raise his game."You certainly don't want to come in unprepared, let's put it that way," Cain says. "He can come in unprepared if he feels like it, because he's got the cachet, and he can just pull it off. Out of respect for him, I would never want to come in unprepared -- in fact, out of respect for everybody here, who are working their butts off."As implied in the Nov. 21 episode, Casey has some sort of romantic history with casino host Sam Marquez (Vanessa Marcil)."As I interpret it, Casey is a very nice guy," Cain says. "Now, if you ask Vanessa's character whether I'm a good guy or bad guy, she might have a different interpretation. Their relationship is funny. It's a cat-and-mouse game between the two of them."They've been together for so long and care for each other a great deal, but they want to one-up each other all the time. So it gets very interesting."As for a playing a suit-and-tie role, Cain says, "Sure, I'll play a billionaire any day. It's so much fun, make-believe, all that power. It's fun, all the wheeling and dealing."
